The chief aim of marriage varies from culture to culture and possibly from time to time.

In some cultures marriage is seen as the propagation of the male progeny.

In some other cultures marriages are conducted purely to retain family wealth within, say, two families.

Then there are marriages that are conducted mainly for the fulfillment of religious duties.

In some cultures temporary marriages (say, for 3 hours, 1 day etc.) is allowed just to satisfy the sexual urges of consenting adults who do not want a permanent arrangement.

You could think of many more, but what would you consider is the chief aim of marriage?
