What is your view on female genital mutilation aka female circumcision?

I have interacted with many people concerning female genital mutilation. While there is a worldwide campaign against the action, a lot of people believe there are good sides to it. Most proponents agreed that it makes a woman to be less promiscuous and that seems to be the main reason for the action. Hence, I am trying to gather general opinions on the subject.
