Is a Merger between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank a good idea?

First there were only rumors. Now there is confirmation of actual talks.

Both banks had a difficult time after the financial crisis. To simplify:

  • Commerzbank had a lot of loans to the shipping industry - which sank - and had to be bailed out.
  • Deutsche Bank barely survived but had to pay fines and has a notoriously unprofitable investment banking.

Both banks are still licking their wounds - 10 years later. Commerzbank looks a bit healthier than Deutsche Bank at the moment.
